How the 'dog house plans' happenedI wanted to build my dog a dog house. After searching for some time, I could only find dog houses where the door took up one whole side of the dog house. You know the design? Well - I am not technical, but at least I could see that such a design does not provide protection against wind or cold. Tired of searching, I asked Paul, an engineer friend of mine, to draw me a dog house (not realizing what engineers do). I was expecting some hand drawings and rough sketches on a piece of paper. After four days he came back with something that looked like CAD drawings to me - VERY professional. He discussed it with me, asked about the door, asked what I wanted to do in winter, in summer and a number of other questions. He refused to give me the plans and said he will be back in a few more days. What Paul gave me was exceptional. I kindly asked Paul whether I could publish this on the internet and he said "No". "It is not professional enough and besides..... - it needs a proper manual. What about if somebody wants to put the dog house in Canada as compared to Texas?" We discussed the plans some more, and Paul came up with an exceptional design, plans and manual. As you can imagine, Paul as engineer, put in various different options to accommodate different designs and finishes. One thing he refused to do was a material list. He said "Well Tom, I can do a materials list - which would mean I have to take away this option and that option. Because with them I cannot do a materials list." We decided to rather leave a choice of design and options, than to limit it and include the materials list. |
